About Silent Landscapes
About this site
You'll find a lot of nature photography and wilderness photography on this site, i.e., photography of silent landscapes. I also post other photos once in a while.
Photographic Style
I try not to be pretentious about photography. This is partially because I don't think landscape photography is art (it aims to be an objective representation of the sublime), but it's also because I'm not a professional. I do this for fun. Because of this you'll find a lot of photos on this site that aren't perfect.
Purpose
The purpose of this site is primarily to help people find beautiful places. I usually look on the web instead of in guidebooks for interesting places to visit, and online photos always play a big role. My hope is that my photos inspire you to spend time in the wilderness.
About the photographer
My name is Joshua Hill. I've been doing nature photography frequently since 2005, when my wife and I met and spent our first summer together backpacking through the Colorado Rockies. I live in Boulder, Colorado and try to spend at least 4 weeks per year sleeping outside. That's easiest for me to do in the Rockies, but once or more a year I try to go backpacking somewhere distant. During the summer of 2009 I'll be taking my third trip to Alaska.
I've been backpacking since I was a teenager and I'm an Eagle Scout. Photography just gives me another excuse to go out into the wilderness.
During the week I do Internet marketing and web strategy for Vermilion.
